Let the Web-Quest begin

Well this week and next, my students are plunging into the Web-Quest world. I'm so excited! I think that this is going to be a great experience for them. Let me share what they're doing. First they are utilizing Google docs and they are building their Webquest via that program(I wonder where I learned about that?:)) We are in the Industrial Revolution Unit of our year and one of the things we focus on is Inventions from 1750-1900. So, what each of the students are doing, they are choosing an Inventor and they will become an expert by creating the webquest.
The kicker is that they are allowed to do someone, if they so choose, that is of their ethnic background and/or gender. So I had a lot of girls choose to do women inventors. I was so excited to see that they wanted to explore that direction of their project. One of my girls lives in a two-mom home and she was very excited about her research and the freedom I have given to her. The rest of the class was excited as well. Of course it was only the first day of research, I will be interested to see how the rest of the week goes with this.
The next coming two days I will give them, time to work on their project in two of their next classes. I have them three days this week. The last day(Friday) it is due. And they will present it. This is what I'm looking forward to. I think that I might have each student grade each other. Since a Webquest has an evaluation page each student can evaluate each of their peers Webquest. I'll let you all know. I look forward to the week!!!!

That sounds like a really engaging project. I wish I could use Google docs in my classroom but we're not allowed to support students in getting email addresses and they need gmail to use it, right? Do you see any way around that? I haven't thought of one yet. I have been able to use blogs in my classroom-I wonder where I learned about that. The MAT program really has enhanced my knowledge and ability to use technology in my classroom. That was an unexpected benefit of an online program that I'm very pleased with.

I just read the first section of the reading for our class for the Inquiry discussion-"Windows on our Classrooms" and it was all about giving student's choice. I love that you are doing that in your project. It will make a huge difference in student buy in and engagement.
